Trip to Japan? Sure – Let her Speak? Nope

Let’s get this straight:

The Mayor moved the North Miami Beach commission meeting so he could go on a taxpayer-funded trip to Japan. But when Commissioner LYNN SU North Miami Beach Commissioner couldn’t attend, because she was with her mother in the hospital, he refused to let her commission report be read into the record?

Apparently, international travel makes the cut…but a commissioner’s report? Not worth the time.

Commissioner Su shared her report with WakeUp NMB, and now we’re sharing it with you.

📝 Good evening Mayor, fellow Commissioners, and members of the public,

I regret that I cannot be with you tonight. I am at the hospital with my mother—family must come first, and I trust you’ll understand.

That said, I need to be absolutely clear about where I stand on the City Manager process. What is happening right now does not sit right with me. I just received the candidate list, and given our back-to-back budget workshops and full agendas, there has been no real opportunity to properly review or interview these applicants.

To be blunt—this applicant pool does not reflect the caliber of leadership a city of our size and importance deserves. Rushing to make a hire from this list would shortchange both our residents and our future.

I strongly urge this Commission to pause, reopen the process, and conduct a true nationwide recruitment. Let’s cast a wider net to ensure we attract the very best talent available—not just those who happened to apply in the first round.

And let’s commit to doing it transparently. Cities like Boca Raton hold public, open interviews with their finalists so residents can see the process firsthand. That is the kind of accountability and trust our community deserves.

This decision is simply too important to get wrong. The City Manager is the most critical hire we will make. Let’s slow down, do it right, and secure the leader North Miami Beach truly needs.
