WakeUp NMB held another informative Membership Meeting this past Monday evening featuring our guest speaker, North Miami Beach City Manager Darvin Williams.
Mr. Williams, who began in February, spoke with residents about the city’s current challenges and the work ahead as the administration prepares the upcoming 2026/2027 budget. He opened the floor to questions immediately and emphasized that residents deserve transparency and communication. As he stated during the meeting, “We are in this boat together and we need to fix this ship.”
Members asked thoughtful questions on several important topics, including the difference between the CRA and the newly created Housing and Economic Development Department. Mr. Williams explained that the CRA focuses on addressing slum and blight within designated CRA boundaries under strict state regulations, while the Housing and Economic Development Department focuses on growth and development opportunities citywide.
The conversation also focused heavily on the city’s financial challenges and the need for serious discussions regarding spending and long-term sustainability. Mr. Williams explained that his administration is reviewing operations citywide, identifying inefficiencies, reducing unnecessary costs, and looking for ways to increase revenues while maintaining services to residents.
He shared several initiatives already underway, including his “One City, One Team” approach, designed to break down departmental silos and create a more efficient and collaborative government structure. He also discussed plans to streamline processes, improve accountability, strengthen code enforcement operations, and modernize city functions.
One major issue discussed was HB 1451, legislation that could significantly impact revenue generated from the city’s water utility surcharge for outside customers. Residents were encouraged to stay informed and support efforts surrounding the petition asking Governor Ron DeSantis to veto the bill.
Mr. Williams also spoke positively about resident engagement, stating that North Miami Beach has one of the most active residential communities he has ever seen. That is a direct reflection of residents who continue showing up, asking questions, attending meetings, and demanding accountability from their local government.
As WakeUp NMB President reminded attendees, our involvement matters. Attending commission meetings, speaking during public comment, and staying informed are all critical if we want to help move our city forward.
WakeUp NMB thanks Mr. Williams for taking the time to meet directly with residents and answer questions openly. We look forward to continuing the conversation and working together toward a stronger, more efficient, and more transparent North Miami Beach.
